Theme-evening Waving Brusilia, on skyscrapers, with new video work by Myriam Van Imschoot
What:Theme-evening on living in skyscrapers with lectures of architects, urbanists, writers, etc. Two video’s made in the skyscraper Brusilia will be screened on this occasion.

De Brusilia is een woontoren van 100m hoog met 36 verdiepingen, die begin jaren ‘70 op de plek van het vroegere Sportpaleis gebouwd werd naar de plannen van architect Jacques Cuisinier, ook bekend van de Martini-toren en het Muntcentrum. Oorspronkelijk zou het complex uit drie torens van100 meterbestaan. Hiervan is uiteindelijk slechts één toren gebouwd. In 2011 startte de aanbouw van Brusilia 2, die maar 9 verdiepingen telt.
Op dinsdag 12 februari organiseert de Dienst Nederlandse Cultuur i.s.m. Paul-Alexander Crop, Brusilialiefhebber én –bewoner een thema-avond rond dit fascinerende staaltje architectuur. In het nabij gelegen Espace Scarabeus nemen o.a. Leo van Broeck (gerenommeerde stem in het hoogbouw – debat en verbonden aan de KUL als ingenieur architect), Sven Stercken (ingenieur architect, verbonden aan Sint Lucas en één van de voortrekkers van Docomomo, een organisatie die zich inzet voor het behoud van de gebouwen van het modernistische era), Jens Aerts (ingenieur architect en stedenbouwkundige met Brusselexpertise, nu verbonden aan de VUB) en Eric de Kuyper (cineast en auteur met een voorliefde voor Brussel) het woord. Gui Polspoel, die voor zijn mediacarrière een opleiding ingenieur architect volgde en tevens ex-Brusiliabewoner, modereert. Daarnaast worden twee korte poëtische films van kunstenares Myriam Van Imschoot vertoond die intrigerend beeldend werk maakte rond de Brusilia, waar zij zelf ook woont. Nadien volgt een drink in een appartement op de 32ste verdieping van de Brusiliatoren.

I kindly invite you to attend the private performance that I will give with Doreen Kutzke at the Rumpsti Pumsti (Musik) gallery in Berlin on 28th August. We will perform Hola Hu, a vocal piece that embraces yodeling as a point of departure for a deconstructive treat.
Rumpsti Pumsti (Musik) is a label, mailorder shop and gallery specialized in sound art, experimental music and spoken word. The performance of Hola Hu will be the ‘farewell act’ at the Weserstrasse 165 in Neuköln, as the gallery is moving out to a new location from 7 september onwards.
Doors open at 6 pm.
Entrance: 3 euro.

Although wishes and desires are sometimes difficult to express in words, everyone still translates them into an actual quest. This quest can last a lifetime (in search of happiness) or a few hours (searching for the right shoes). In this performance – based on found ‘classified ads’ – Tristero attempts to bring this universal quest to light. Man is truly searching for all sorts of things: friendship and sex, but also work, collectables, missing animals and so on. A wanted ads page is therefore also an ‘open forum’ in which everyone wants to change their life and have their say.

Int the frame of the Opera Days Rotterdam, De Player is organizing a yodel event featuring screenings, readings and concerts. In this context a first version of ‘Hola Hu’ will première, a composition for two unisono voices that deconstruct a yodel to its micro-elements. ‘Hola Hu’ is the first vocal sound piece that Myriam Van Imschoot composed as a hommage for her yodel teacher and singer Doreen Kutzke.
Hola Hu is part of a longer series of related works in which Van Imschoot explores the voice phenomena of yodeling, crying, ululation and other forms of communication that bridge distance.

Séance d’écoute
Le Bruit de la Bande est un rendez-vous d’écoute trimestriel.
Qu’elle soit parole ou pur matériau sonore, la voix se situe au cœur de cette soirée. La voix, au travers d’un panel d’œuvres où elle prend forme dans tous ses états, en tant que mots, chants, raclements, cris, grognements, souffles, sons… Comme dirait Hugo Ball : « Jolifanto ô falli bambla, grossiga m’pfa habla horem »
Pour cette séance d’écoute deux animatrices radio aiguilleront les auditeurs tout au long de ce parcours éclétique dans les sons de la voix qui parle, qui bruite, qui chante.
Nous donnerons à entendre de nombreux auteurs (Mike Patton, Alessandro Bosetti, Robert Aschley, Michel Collet, Christophe Tarkos, Radio Free robots, Myriam Van Imshoot…)
Nous flirterons avec la poésie sonore, avec la musicalité du langage et avec la voix pure matière….
Ce programme diffusé et enregistré en direct sera ensuite rediffusé en différé sur Radio Grésivaudan le 22 avril dans l’émission Chocolat 9 CH.

With the included invitation I would like to draw your attention to my solo Living Archive that I will be performing in the new cultural center of Ostend, De Grote Post, on May 3 and 4.
It’s for me quite a sentimental gig this time, because Ostend is the city of my youth, and part of my performance evokes the culture of marine life and shanties.
May I kindly welcome you there? The performance is bilingual (English/Dutch). Mind that there’s also an afternoon show on Saturday 4th at 17:00; so no worry to get back home for those who may come from afar.

Living Archive is an hour long sound and performance piece in which Myriam Van Imschoot invites the audience into a memory theater of sorts. What do we collect during a life and how do we recollect a life through sound?
Myriam Van Imschoot takes up the challenge of literally ‘giving a voice to’ her sound archives collected over thirty years, jumping freely between autobiography and collective memory, songs and found footage, pirate radio programs and a professional legacy of interviews and conversations with dancers and choreographers. Personal and materialized, Living Archive evokes also an archeology of listening and recording, as it designed our sonic memory during the last decades.
Living Archive is a tribute to the voice and to listening. Identities and registers are never stable. Transformation and the rupture make the order of the day. Three figures are woven throughout: the stammer, the cry and the recitative.

Wie zijn oude cassettes reeds heeft weggegooid, zou daar na het zien van deze voorstelling nog wel eens spijt van kunnen krijgen. Voor Living Archive haalde Myriam Van Imschoot de schoendozen vol cassettes van onder het stof. Ze ontdekte vergeten dagboekfragmenten, liefdescassetjes, mixed tapes, interviews, zeemansliedjes van haar vader die in de zeemacht diende en in zijn kajuit brieven insprak op bandjes. Met dat alles bouwde ze een hoogst persoonlijke solo voor een breder publiek.
Hoe zou een leven er uitzien als je alleen nog geluid had om je op te baseren voor een vertelling? Wat bewaren we en wat vergeten we, en wat doen we met de geheimen die onderhuids doorklinken? Dat is het uitgangspunt van deze poëtische theatervoorstelling. Een uur lang brengt Van Imschoot haar geluidsarchief terug tot leven. Ze bedient walkmans, ghettoblasters, hifitorens, magnetische bandopnemers, nu eens als suppoost dan weer als een marionettenspeler. De zee en de koude oorlog zijn nooit veraf, punk en new wave kleuren de tienerjaren, en gaandeweg komen ook baanbrekende choreografen aan het woord.
Living Archive is de eerste solo van Myriam Van Imschoot. Sommigen zullen haar nog kennen als dansrecensente bij kranten als De Morgen en Gazet van Antwerpen. Ze verdiende haar sporen onder meer als een artistieke medewerker van Meg Stuart, Benoît Lachambre en het Brusselse theatercollectief Tristero. Sinds 7 jaar brengt ze haar eigen werk op de nationale en internationale scènes.
“Encerclée de rideaux de bandes magnétiques et d’appareils audio design ou désuets, la performeuse nous invitait au voyage dans le temps. Dans l’intimité de cette chambre d’écoute chaleureuse et calfeutrée, les voix du passé surgissaient, se mêlaient pour ouvrir des mondes parallèles, réveiller des atmosphères et, par bribes, raconter, parfois en chanson, l’Historie. From 9 to 12 April I will be in residence with Sarma’s latest project Oral Site at the Beursschouwburg’s Zilveren Zaal. Oral Site is a digital platform that I run with a group of artists who share a fascination for the ‘spoken word’ and engage in sound and experimental publication (oralsite.be). During the festival make up Oral Site engages in a daily program full of lectures, (philosopher and radiomaker François Noudelmann), live sound installation (Christof Migone), performances (Ida Wilde) and informal encounters and artist talks in the Listening Room Sessions, an “easy environment for hard core listening'”. The whole program is online on sarma.be, but here’s special attention to two activities:

More than One Tie, an interview project by Tom Engels regarding the intimate artist circle affiliated with Antonia Baehr. On the notion of affinity. About gossip, perfumes, body odor, alter ego’s, social practices, and the many lines floating in between these issues.
12 April: 18:00 – 20:00: installation and lecture Christof Migone
Sound artist, professor and curator Christof Migone presents on the occasion of his latest book on sound art (Sonic Somatic – Errant Bodies Press) several sound works and a concluding lecture. He still looks for some volunteer performers to participate (contact Linda Sepp for more information lin.se@gmx.de).

Beste,
Myriam Van Imschoot & CAMPO nodigen u van harte uit op een van de presentatieavonden rond jodelen. Die vinden plaats op maandag 18 maart en woensdag 20 maart om 20u30 in CAMPO victoria (Fratersplein 7). Drie jodelaars zullen er hun verhaal komen doen (in de vorm van een gesproken ‘portret’) waarbij ze het hebben over hun band met jodelen, hun drijfveren en achtergronden. Het zijn badkamerzangers, après-ski-entertainers, uitgeweken Zwitsers, voormalige rechterhanden van de wereldvermaarde Bobbejaan Schoepen, etc. Kortom, mensen zoals u en ik, en toch weer niet.
De opzet van de avonden in CAMPO is niet om een theatervoorstelling te ensceneren, wel om een doorgeefluik te creëren waarlangs de verhalen die Myriam hebben geboeid (tijdens haar eerste terreinverkenning rond het jodelen) ook andere oren kunnen bereiken. Jodelen is het sleutelgat om in diverse werelden binnen te kijken. Over tuimelende stemmen, alpenverlangen en de hang naar een beetje beroemdheid.
Met JODELPORTETTEN wordt het werkproces of de fascinatie van Myriam Van Imschoot heel even geopend voor een klein publiek.
